Matt grew up cross country skiing in western Massachusetts as a member of the Berkshire Trails Ski Club. He developed a passion for the sport within this club under the guidance of his coach Ed Hamel. He is a graduate of Stratton Mountain School and Middlebury College (2001), and began his coaching career out of college in Whitefish, Montana, working for the Glacier Nordic Ski Team. That season set the hook for him.
Matt worked the next four years coaching at Burke Mountain Academy in northern Vermont where he now has his cabin. In 2006, he began coaching with the U.S. Ski Team – four years at Head Development Coach, two years as a World Cup Coach, and three seasons in his current role as Head Women's Coach. When he isn't working on the World Cup or in Utah, he is back at home in Vermont fixing up his cabin and sauna, or fishing where he won't be found.
