BIOGRAPHY:
Skyler Davis had a breakout year in 2011. His consistent performances and strong work ethic earned him a spot on the U.S. Ski Team for 2012. A native New Englander from Jericho, VT, he grew up and developed his love for skiing in the local Bill Koch League. Davis scored his first U.S. Championship podium with a third in the classic sprint and also took third in the SuperTour Finals classic sprint just one-hundredth of a second behind Olympian and teammate Simi Hamilton. Davis is also a 2010 graduate of nordic powerhouse Stratton Mountain School, Andy Newell's alma mater, and often trains with the Olympian in the offseason. 2011 also saw Davis win the Junior Olympic classic sprint and grab his first FIS race podiums as a member of the U.S. Junior World Championships Team. Davis deferred his acceptance to Middlebury College so that he may focus on training as the newest member of the U.S. Ski Team.
SKYLER SAYS:
This past year was really exciting. Working with my coaches Sverre, Matt and Poppet is such a great experience. Training with my teammates at SMS is really motivating and it’s icing on the cake when Andy Newell joins us for dry-land training sessions. This past summer, I really set my sights on making the U.S. World Junior Championships Team. Doing so with a third place finish at Senior Nationals was unbelievable! Traveling to Estonia with the U.S. Ski Team coaches and athletes was an awesome experience and really made me aware of how high I need to raise the bar to perform on the international level. I am really looking forward to next year and am already pushing the envelope to achieve new goals that I have established for myself.
FIRST TRACKS:
Growing up in Vermont, Davis has been on skis since before he can remember. Both his mom and dad are passionate skiers that get out on snow as much as they can and instilled a real love for the sport in the young skier. At first, Davis was more into alpine skiing and really enjoyed running gates after a while tried Nordic skiing and fell for the sport. He started training with Murray Banks and Eric Barker - coaches who really inspired Davis - through the local Bill Koch League in Northwest, Vermont.
OFF THE SNOW:
Surfing and basketball are his off-snow passions. He developed a love for the sport of surfing and gets amped up when big swells start hitting the coast of New England, usually in the later summer. He says it’s awesome to be able to travel to distant surf locations when the ski season ends. He loves to watch and enjoy all sports, especially the Patriots on Sunday and of course the Celtics during the winter and springtime.
